This image illustrates the use of multiple software packages using TIFF for data interchange. PaintShopPro5 and Microsoft Photo Editor were used to tweak the luminosity, brightness and contrast and to shrink the image to 20% of its original dimensions. Picture Window 2.5 was used to compress and save the image in JPEG format.

As a rule, images are captured and processed in a loss-less format, like TIFF. They're converted to a lossy format, like JPEG, and saved only as a final step.
